Food is one of the great pleasures of a holiday in Evia. The island combines the sea and the mountains, so you can enjoy fresh fish by the harbour at lunchtime and grilled meat in a mountain village at dinner. Here are the dishes and local products to look out for during your stay at Norte Luxury Villas. For specific restaurants, see our guide to where to eat in Agioi Apostoloi and Petries.

Fresh fish and seafood

Agioi Apostoloi is a fishing village, and the tavernas by the water serve the day’s catch. Order fish by weight (ask what came in that morning), grilled with olive oil and lemon. Other classics:

  • Grilled sardines: a local favourite; the area even holds a sardine festival in summer.
  • Fried calamari and grilled octopus, best with a glass of ouzo or tsipouro.
  • Kakavia: the traditional fisherman’s soup.
  • Shrimp saganaki: prawns baked with tomato and feta.

Meze, the Greek way to eat

Greeks rarely order one dish each. Instead, the table fills with small plates to share: tzatziki, fava (yellow split-pea purée), taramosalata, horta (boiled wild greens with olive oil), fried courgettes, cheese pies and a big Greek salad. It is the perfect way to taste a bit of everything.

Kymi figs

The area around Kymi, north of us, is famous throughout Greece for its figs. Try them fresh in late summer, or dried and stuffed with walnuts at any time of year. They make a great gift to take home.

Honey, cheese and olive oil

Evia’s hills produce fragrant thyme and pine honey, and you will find local cheeses and excellent olive oil in village shops and markets. Pick some up for breakfast on your terrace.

Mountain tavernas and grilled meat

In mountain villages such as Steni, at the foot of Mount Dirfys, tavernas are known for lamb, goat, pork chops and sausages cooked over charcoal. Combine lunch with a walk in the fir forests.

Sweets and coffee

Finish with loukoumades (honey doughnuts), galaktoboureko or a spoon sweet, and try a Greek coffee or a freddo espresso, the iced coffee every Greek drinks in summer.

Cooking at your villa

Every villa has a fully equipped kitchen (oven, induction hob, dishwasher and Nespresso machine), and the outdoor dining area next to the pool is perfect for a barbecue-style dinner with fish from the market. Guests also get 10% off breakfast at Cana, our partner next door.
